I make tampers from a variety of materials and in a variety of styles. My first tampers were made from old beat up pipes-chop off the bowl and add a tip. I still make some like that. I like to use various woods I find while walking in the woods around our house. Cherry,Locust,Mulberry and Grapevine are some I've used. Antler is a favorite material ,as is Briar.I also use a variety of acrylic and vulcanite or cumberland rod. Lately I have been machining some from brass rod stock. For tips,I either machine them from brass, briar or use various shell casings. Picks are made from either .125 or .140" brass or stainless steel rod.
